School libraries

Funded by the Charlotte Henry Study Grant 2023, this zine contains key insights and information as part of Jade Smith's research into graphic novel collections in NSW libraries. The aims of the reflective research, undertaken during her Master of Information Studies (Applied Research) project, were to investigate the value of graphic novel collections in libraries and how these can be leveraged and understood in the context of a collection that can sometimes be challenged, maligned or misappropriated.

The Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) recently surveyed school library assistant, library technician, librarian, and teacher librarian members working in school libraries to find out what they would like to see from the ALIA Schools Group and how they might like to engage.

The United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), sometimes called the Global Goals, or the United Nations 2030 Agenda, are a shared vision for peace, prosperity, and the protection of the planet. At the heart of the SDGs are 17 goals, each of which is an urgent call to action for the realisation of a better world.

As part of the Professional Pathways Initiative, the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) commissioned research in November 2021 to address the specialised needs of school libraries within the context of ALIA’s vision for developing a professional pathways framework.

It certainly is a devil of a time in libraries! Over the last three decades the rapid advancement of Internet Communication Technologies (ICT) has radically transformed the way we live, work, play, communicate, think and learn. These changes have impacted greatly on libraries, threatening the traditional concept of the library. Libraries face a myriad of challenges in an ongoing quest to meet the incessantly changing learning and social needs of their communities.

This poster presentation discusses use of augmented reality through mobile applications to facilitate learning experiences in the library.

This advocacy document [poster] illustrates the ways that Australian school libraries power high performance government, Catholic and independent schools through providing modern learning environments, digital hubs, developing student research skills, promoting reading for pleasure, providing curriculum support and cybersafety education, celebrating diversity, enabling participation and access, coordinating special programs, and building communities.

Well-resourced school libraries staffed by qualified library professionals are essential to rebuild the literacy levels of Australian students and achieve an appropriate level of reading competency. School libraries are necessary to create safe, confident users of online content and ensure that young people are media literate.

This presentation (PowerPoint slides) provides reports by librarians and other school staff on school library services within schools located in New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia.
